Double awards success for Performance Yachts

Double awards success for Performance Yachts

28th October 2010

It was apparent from the moment that she was launched and started trials that Dixon Yacht Design had designed a very special yacht in the Performance Yachts PY-100, ‘Liara’. This has now been confirmed at the prestigious Showboats International Design Awards where last night Dixon Yacht Design picked up not one, but two, awards.

The awards, where in two of the most competitive and sought after categories and Bill Dixon was on hand to receive them. The first was the “Naval Architecture Award – sailing yachts” and the second was “The Design and Technology Award”, which was awarded to Dixon Yacht Design for the very innovative lifting keel fitted to ‘Liara’; a keel which does not intrude into the interior but allows the yacht to visit shallow anchorages and harbours and have a remarkable sailing performance for a yacht designed to be a fast cruising yacht, not an out and out racer.

The magnitude of Dixon Yachts Designs achievement in winning these two awards is best summed up by the words of the awards programme, “The judging criteria for this category explored how well the yachts perform at sea in all conditions, and it was ‘Liara’ that rose to the top of the class with her clean, well executed lines, telescopic keel that does not intrude on the accommodations, and unassailable combination of sailing performance and design.”

The Showboats Design Awards are judged by an independent jury which is comprised of yacht owners, senior yacht crew and acclaimed designers and stylists from within, as well as outside, the marine industry; all are experts in their specific fields.

Bill Dixon was understandably delighted with the awards, “To win one award is always special but to win two, and particularly these two for the same yacht, means a great deal. We always strive hard to design yachts which really satisfy our client’s ambitions while giving them the very latest technology. With the Performance Yachts range I am certain we have the balance absolutely right”.

America’s Cup experience and business acumen are the primary attributes of the new 34th America’s Cup Regatta Director, Iain Murray.

As Regatta Director, Murray (52, Sydney, Australia) heads up the new America’s Cup Race Management (ACRM), holding the dual role of CEO of the independent organization.

This is the first time in the event’s 159-year history that the defender has divested management of the competition into the hands of a neutral body, a central part of its vision to move the America’s Cup into the future.

Established by four times America’s Cup helmsman, Olympian, and ten times World Champion sailor Iain Murray AM, Azzura Marine combines decades of boat building experience, world class facilities and state-of-the-art technology to produce quality custom motor and sail vessels and high performance racing yachts, to the same high standards as required to construct the PY-115 and PY-125.

“Azzura Marine has exactly the right pedigree to deliver the quality yachts expected by discerning Performance Yachts clients,” stated Performance Yachts founder Adrian Nicolle.

Iain Murray AM, said he was excited at the prospect of further expanding the group’s marine interests.

Adrian Nicolle pointed out that “With Southern Ocean Marine building our PY-100 and PY-109 models and Azzura Marine the PY-115 and PY-125, I am confident that Performance Yachts has two of the world’s top boat builders producing our yachts”.

Designed by Bill Dixon and his team at Dixon Yacht Design the PY-125, like her sisters, is a thoroughly modern, light but immensely strong fast cruising yacht, which offers sumptuous accommodation for owners, guests, and crew. Furthermore, she will be more than capable of making her presence felt at the world’s top superyacht regattas.

The PY-125 will be available with the unusual, but highly effective lifting keel option, as seen on the PY-100. Not a customary feature on such a sleek yacht, it does not intrude into, or compromise the yachts living accommodation, but succeeds in minimizing her draft to a shallow 3.75 metres with keel up and a hydro-dynamically efficient 5.25 metres with keel down.

Performance Yachts will announce its full 2011 range later this year.

‘Liara’, the Performance Yachts PY-100 is back at Monaco – for all the right reasons

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

There probably won’t be a better time for anyone interested in the Performance Yachts range than to visit this year’s Monaco Yacht Show in September. Not only will rapidly growing Nicolle Associates, the Southampton UK based yacht brokers and charter management company, be presenting one of the shows undisputed stars of last year, the  PY-100 ‘Liara’, but also there will be every other principal in the Performance Yachts team.

On board ‘Liara’ will be Adrian Nicolle and John Danby from Performance Yachts, Directors and yard manager from Southern Ocean Marine, the builders of the PY-100 and PY-109 and, exhibiting at the show in their own rights, will be Azzura Marine, builders of the PY-115 and PY-125, and Dixon Yacht Design, who are responsible for the design of the whole Performance Yachts range which currently spans 100 to 125 feet.

‘Liara’ returns, and is up for sale, for all the right reasons. After only 18 months of ownership, during which time the yacht has distinguished herself in several races and regattas, and provided the owner and his family with extremely comfortable and fast cruising, he has decided that he wants to continue his Performance Yachts experience, but on a larger model from the growing Performance Yachts fleet.

‘Liara’s owner says, ‘This yacht has been everything I wanted and more. She is competitive racing, obviously fast when cruising and a superb live aboard yacht. Her build quality has proved to be very much more than the ‘skin deep’ first impression that is all some yachts manage to exude, and after 18 months she is as good as new. The only downside is that for my personal circumstances I would like to have a slightly larger yacht but, I shall be using exactly the same team at the designers, the builders and Performance Yachts to design and build her’.

Nicolle Associates, apart from their sales responsibilities, can also arrange charters on ‘Liara’, which has already been successfully chartered on a number of occasions in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, with excellent comments being made by guests on board.

Potential purchasers or charterers of ‘Liara’ can get more information from Adrian Nicolle on +44 (0) 23 8045 6348 or on the findaboat website at,  PY-100 ‘Liara’ for sale link or, of course, at the Monaco Show.

No expense has been spared and no detail, however small, has been missed from inception to completion of this exceptional light-to-moderate displacement yacht design.

Built using the latest high tech composite construction ‘Liara’ far exceeds expectation. A lifting keel is incorporated into the fine hull of this Performance Yachts 100 which has a very long waterline. Her tall, carbon fibre rig means less weight and a very high sail area / displacement ratio.

Of the 14 categories, 10 awards will go to the owner of the winning yacht, while four are individual awards

This year will see some changes to the World Superyacht Awards program. In a recent press release, BIM said, “As the superyacht industry has grown and developed over the years, we feel that the yachts and the designers and craftsmen behind their construction deserve to be recognized specifically in the areas of interior design, styling, innovation and technology.”

And for this reason, BIM has created the ShowBoats Design Awards. The award ceremony will take place on Friday, October 26, 2010 at the Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump’s private members club, in Palm Beach, Florida, and will incorporate the individual design categories from the World Superyacht Awards as well as new categories, including the Design and Technology Award, Most Innovative Interior Layout Award and Best Tender Design Awards for both sports and limousine tenders.

"Liara" the Peformance Yachts 100 has been nominated as "Best Sailing Yacht in 30m to 44m size range".

Dixon Yacht Design 73′ Sloop

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

LA LUNA, a Dixon Yacht Design 73′ Sloop, is an outstanding example of Bill Dixon’s powerful custom built cruisers.

Superbly finished and detailed, from her uncluttered decks (teak over e-glass), her latest technology, carbon rig with in-boom furling, her new set of Doyle high tech sails and her vast carefully designed cockpit with large central dining table, fridge etc.

La Luna

Her Nav Systems are the latest spec from B&G H3000 Series with Furuno Radar/GPS/Chartplotter.

Inside, her beautifully appointed interior is finished in haya beech over stainless kickplates. Fully air-conditioned Cruisair 72,000 BTU. The well equipped galley has separate stainless fridges and freezers as well as Miele Gas Oven with electric hob, Dishwasher and ample storage.

The cabins are all light, airy and voluminous giving the impression of a much larger yacht. The fore-cabin is equipped with a large double berth and single berth which allows luxurious accommodation as a crew cabin or as a fourth cabin on a privately run yacht.

The resulting yacht has a striking clean appearance and because of her construction by a well renowned yard specialising in advance composites, she tips the scales at under 40 tonnes with performance to match from her powerful, easy-handling rig.

This yacht is in brand-new condition having been carefully used in her first season and having covered over 9,000 trouble-free nautical miles.
