1962 Fairey Huntsman 28 for sale in Cowes, England

A truly stunning example of this classic Fairey Huntsman 28 two berth classic sports cruiser.

The Huntsman is one of the greatest motor cruisers of all time, “Sunday Girl” is hull number 3. Designed originally by Ray Hunt and modified by Alan V. Burnard of Fairey Marine in Hamble, the Fairey Huntsman 28 is renowned for very superior handling characteristics and seakeeping. During the late 1960s and 1970s they were raced highly successfully offshore and gained many trophies. If a refurbished ‘Classic’ and part of the nations heritage is what you’re after this is a must to view.

Powered by twin 1992 Ford Mermaid Majestic 180hp engines which have been carefully refurbished by Mermaid Marine during 2017.

Viewing highly recommended by future “custodians” of this once in a lifetime opportunity to own a sound Fairey Huntsman.

Fairey Huntsman 31 Aft Cabin #1 for sale in Poole, Dorset

Fairey Huntsman 31 Aft Cabin #1 for sale in Poole, Dorset

Fairey Marine produced power-boats that were the class of the field and the epitome of style.

The Fairey Huntsman 31 was the personal brain child of Chief Designer Alan Burnard who persuaded the Directors of the need for a boat to slot in between the still-selling Huntsman at 28 feet and the Swordsman at 33 feet.  All hulls were made from multiple layers of Agba veneers that were hot-moulded in an autoclave at Hamble Point near Southampton.

All Huntsman 31s are renowned for their soft and dry ride which is why they are sought after when rarely coming onto the market. Venator benefits from renovation work to her hot-moulded hull and a sympathetic freshening of her interior yet keeping many original features.  These boats were strong, light and powerful being built to go places.

In addition to craftsmanship on the hull, Venator in the last 3 years has been completely rewired and LED lights in both cabins are a concession to modern times.  Other work includes a re-paint with two period 210bhp Ford Sabre engines driving through Borg-Warner gearboxes to 3 bladed propellers.  Earlier this year 4 new batteries, anti-fouling and new anodes were fitted as well as an oil-change for the engines.

A top speed of over 30 knots is regularly achieved.

Thus, the fundamentals have all been addressed.  Venator like all Fairey power boats is best described as a production class GT boat and now needs a new custodian to maintain her place in history and take her forward.  Thus, the new owner has the rare opportunity to maintain and enjoy a marine icon that inspired so many over the years.

1964 Fairey Swordsman Mk I Low Profile Aft Cabin for sale in Denia, Spain

1964 Fairey Swordsman Mk I Low Profile Aft Cabin for sale in Denia, Spain

This Fairey Swordsman 33 Aft Cabin motor yacht benefits from the original Mk I low profile aft cabin coachroof which means that unlike the more modern boats the deck is an extension of the cockpit entertaining area. This unique feature is more akin to an aft cockpit boat however with the benefit of an aft cabin for occasional guests, sleeping six in aft cabin, convertible saloon ad V berth forward.

‘White Swordsman’ was built in 1964 and as Swordsman hull #2 is a truly original and iconic Fairey Marine boat having won numerous concourse awards and being admired by many as one of a kind.

Gordon Procter her former owner recalled having bought her in 1969 from Peter Twiss, the former World air-speed record holder, and head of sales at Fairey Marine. Then taking a berth in Yarmouth Harbour – how she soon became known as the most used boat there. She was indeed fully occupied, plying not only the Solent but beyond to the Normandy ports and Channel Islands. It was a good life done in style with much fun, food, good wine and sport, whether water-skiing, paragliding and then – not least; racing.

In September 2007 this Fairey Swordsman Mk I Low Profile Aft Cabin ‘White Swordsman’ featured in an article by Martin Smith in Classic Boat Magazine.

In 2006 her surveyor said “……nearing completion of an extensive re-fit and all work is to a high standard. It is my opinion that this vessel is without doubt one of the best of her type around”.

Concourse 1961 Fairey Huntsman 28 Twin Screw Sports Cruiser for sale in Hamble, England

This professionally refitted and maintained concourse condition Fairey Huntsman 28 twin screw sports cruisers is now some fifty five years of age and has had a vast amount of money spent on her during two staged refits in the last ten years to produce a vessel that is cosmetically and mechanically best of breed.

Internally the standard of joinery in her warm air heated accommodation is exceptional for a vessel of her size and overall she represents the marine equivalent of a Park Lane display motor car.

Re-engined in 2001 with twin 6 cylinder turbocharged 5.9 litre Cummins 215hp diesel engines, close coupled to ZF reverse reduction gearboxes.

Bill Dunlop the renowned Fairey surveyor and former employee of the Fairey Marine factory carried out a pre purchase survey for her current owners in October 2011. This survey including engine oil analysis is available on request, however is now almost irrelevant because the few points identified were dealt with as part of more extensive work now leaving her in best of breed condition.

New teak decks (2013)

Her impressive inventory includes all stainless steel rudders and rudder tubes, Bruce anchor with chain, search light, forward coachroof deck hatch with glass pane, drop down washbasin, pushpit rail, stern ladder and exhausts along with many other stainless steel fitting on deck and throughout.

This Fairey Huntsman 28 benefits from being re-painted to a very high standard. Her exterior varnish work was re-varnished in 2016.

Other features include trim tabs, Simpson and Lawrence Horizon windlass, hydraulic steering system, Moto-Lita steering wheel, LED cockpit courtesy lights, electric head, oven with three burner grill hob unit, fridge, three battery banks, shore power and Mastervolt battery charger and an extremely fine cockpit sprayhood and extension which in the words of her surveyor “appears to be virtually leak proof”.

1966 Fairey Huntress for sale in Ireland

Friday, November 1st, 2013
1966 Fairey Huntress for sale in Ireland

1966 Fairey Huntress for sale in Ireland

This well cared for Fairey Huntress looks stunning and is powered by a Perkins 145 HP 6 cyl Diesel, she sleeps two.

The Fairey Huntress was the brainchild of Richard Fairey. Richard was a keen follower of powerboats and would often watch the Miami – Nassau race. He contacted Raymond C. Hunt, designer of Bertrams and many other boats, and asked if he could use his hull drawings. So began the birth of the now classic Fairey Marine Motor Cruisers.

The Huntress claim to fame were in the James Bond movie ‘From Russia with Love’. James Bond’s boat was a Huntress fitted with a V8 Interceptor petrol engine along with “extra fuel” carried in the oil drums mounted in the cockpit. This oil drum arrangement had been made at the Hamble factory and was tested in Southampton Water to ensure the drums would roll off the transom without a hitch.

The ‘chief baddies’ boat was driven by former world airspeed record holder Peter Twiss ( 1,132 mph in 1956 in a Fairey Delta 2 aircraft). Also driving one of the boats was former Fairey Marine sales director Charles Currey. Apparently they had a wonderful time on location in Scotland and were well looked after by the film company.

The Fairey Huntress model competed in and won awards in various Cowes – Torquay powerboat races over the years often winning the ‘production boat’, the ‘lowest powered finisher’ and the ‘fuel economy’ awards.

This particular example wasn’t raced or rally’d and is free from Bond bullet holes. She as stunning as you would hope from the marque and well worth making a weekend to visit.
