This semi displacement Nelson 34 TSMV ‘Horatia’, is a former Royal Naval fast motor launch which was commissioned by the Admiralty for HMS Illustrious in 1978 and built by Anderson Rigden and Perkins of Whitstable, Kent, England.

She was in use as the Captain’s launch on HMS Illustrious for over twenty years and was acquired following modification for civilian use by a group of former Naval officers and has been in use in the Solent region ever since.

This Nelson 34 TSMV ‘Horatia’ is a well known boat in the Solent area and a frequent visitor to Cowes ferrying members and guests to the Royal Yacht Squadron.

Powered by twin 6354 Perkins 6 cylinder diesel engines each generating 145 HP (fully rebuilt in 2007) driving 3 bladed bronze propellers on shafts each with rudder. Independent fuel system to each engine, 1 x 40 gallons and 1 x 60 gallon steel fuel tanks. Max speed 20 knots.

She benefits from a Garmin GPS map 182 chart plotter, GPS, VHF radio, depth, searchlight, sidelights, masthead, stern and anchor lights, 2 windscreen wipers, magnetic compass, 2 alternator charged batteries. and is fully equipped with galley and electric flush sea toilet.

This is a very well built 2 berth boat ideally suited for day trips in inland waters and coastal cruising .

The Nelson hull is considered to be the finest hull design for dealing with heavy weather, keeping the crew dry and comfortable in most weather conditions. It is a classic Admiralty boat of its period and turns heads wherever it goes for its classic lines and evocative engines sound.

This Nelson 34 TSMV ‘Horatia’ has been fully serviced each year by qualified engineers and has been carefully maintained, painted, polished and varnished by its fastidious and experienced owners.

The boat has always had very limited engine hours. She is in “Solent day boat mode” and rarely exceeds 20 hours a year. She cruises at 12 to 14 knots and will do 18 knots but is not asked to be a speed boat all the time.

Recent maintenance includes:

  • Full engine service at the end of 2016 season
  • Anti foul, burnish props, replace anodes, polish and varnish May 2017
