Author Rob Gibson joined the RYA publications team and interested onlookers on the RYA stand to answer questions and sign copies of the new book.

BBC H2O Show’s Tracey Clarke asked Rob exactly why he decided to write the book. “I see many people out on the water who’ve spent money on their boats and sails but are not using them properly, so I wrote the book to share some of my top tips”, commented Rob.

There have been several books written about sail trimming for racers but this book focuses specifically on the cruising sailor. It’s equally as important for cruisers to trim their sails properly as Rob explained: “With properly trimmed sails you’ll sail more easily, it will be more comfortable and you’ll get to your destination (the pub!) quicker. So if you’re not going well – re-trim the sails.”

Rob also shared his top tips on reefing. “If you think about putting in a reef, do it immediately, however if you’re thinking about taking a reef out, have a cup of tea first before you decide.”

RYA Publications Manager Steen Ingerslev said: “We’re delighted that Rob could be here with us today to launch the book, which is already going like hot cakes. This book is in fact the fastest selling title in RYA history”, he told us, with currently just 27 copies left in the country!

“I’m delighted with how well the book is selling, it’s obviously something people want to read about”, concluded Rob.

Anyone buying the book could also be in with the chance of winning a fantastic competition; a one-day training course courtesy of Poole Sailing Ltd with Rob Gibson himself on an Elan 333.

The special one off training session will go hand in hand with all the advice and techniques Rob outlines in his new book.

All you need to do is purchase a copy of the new book and you’ll automatically be entered into the free prize draw.

RYA Sail Trim Handbook – for Cruisers is available through the RYA shop www.rya.org.uk/shop or pick up a copy at the PSP Southampton Boat Show for just £12.99.

Competition ends 31 October 2010.
